Alan is a licensed clinical psychologist, but has not practiced since his life long hobby took charge. He operated a mail order nursery for 8 years prior to opening the retail nursery in 1997. He has introduced many new plants, designed gardens, and lectured throughout the USA. Alan served as Chair for the 2002 American Hosta Society national convention, and founded the Spokane Hosta Society. His current interests include drought tolerant and rock garden plants, as well as specialty conifers and garden design.  The red rocks of Sedona and the Arizona desert are likewise key interests.

Plant introductions to the trade through Tower Perennials include the 2011 Hosta of the Year, 'Praying Hands', Ligularia japonica, Carex 'Beatlemania', Hosta 'Nancy',  Rosa 'Spectacular Hips', Hosta 'Gig Harbor', Hosta 'Whitewater', Hosta 'Triumph', Hosta 'Crystal Moon', Centranthus 'Neptune', Origanum 'Tide Pool', Mentha 'Liba Mint' and more than a dozen other plants.
